Summer 2011:

Pentangle reunite again for exclusive summer performances.

Solo performance in Dublin alongside Joanna Newsom Sunday 24 July.

Edinburgh Festival solo show Saturday 20 August.

Bert will play two exclusive solo shows this summer. On Sunday 24 July he will appear at historic Marlay Park in Dublin in a special show for @ the Park alongside fellow Drag City artist Joanna Newsom (more details here). On Saturday 20 August Bert will appear at the Edinburgh Festival, with a show at 7.00pm at The Queen's Hall, Edinburgh (more details here).

As well as these solo shows, and following their triumphant 40th anniversary reunion tour in 2008, the original members of Pentangle: Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee, Danny Thompson and Terry Cox – each one a legend in their own right – have reunited again for three special shows this summer. Fresh from the first show at Glastonbury Festival on 25 June, Pentangle also appear as special guests at Cambridge Folk Festival on Saturday 30 July and, in a full evening's performance, at London's Royal Festival Hall on Monday 1 August.

In addition, all five original members of Pentangle are currently working together on new material for the first time since they disbanded in 1973. The group also plan to release live recordings from the 2008 tour in the near future.

Formed in swinging ‘60s London, Pentangle were one of the most exciting and innovative groups in the world, genuinely pushing boundaries and exploring new musical avenues. Simultaneously stars of the underground and darlings of the mainstream, they enjoyed an unprecedented degree of worldwide success for an acoustic band and their influence and musical impact are still both revered and relevant today.

2008's reunion tour was greeted with enormous and critical and popular acclaim:

5 stars “It's an absolute joy to have them back” – The Times

“Every bit as accomplished and successful as those [comeback concerts] performed by Cream in London three years ago … Pentangle's music sounded as fresh, vital and inventive in 2008 as it did back then in the first summer of love” – Variety

Tickets for Pentangle at The Royal Festival Hall (Monday 1 August, 7.30pm) are available from www.southbankcentre.co.uk, by phone on 0844 875 0073 or in person from the ticket office at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX.

Tickets for Bert Jansch at The Queen's Hall (Edinburgh Festival – Saturday 20 August, 7.00pm) are available from www.thequeenshall.net, by phone on 0131 668 2019 or in person from the Box Office, The Queen's Hall, 85-89 Clerk Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9JG.

Bert back on tour with Neil Young (April/May 2011) and playing with the original Pentangle (Summer 2011)

Bert is delighted to be appearing again as Neil Young's special guest on a tour that will kick off April 15 in Durham, NC, and conclude May 11 in Toronto. The tour includes a pair of nights at Boston's Wang Center and two shows at the prestigious and intimate Avery Fisher Hall in NYC's Lincoln Center.

Bert was Neil's special guest on the first two legs of this Neil Young solo tour in the summer of 2010, but had to pull out of the third leg due to health reasons. So he is thrilled to now be back on the road, at Neil's request, on this latest leg of the tour.

“Bert Jansch is the best acoustic guitarist; he's my favourite anyway. For electric guitar, I'd say Jimi Hendrix. But as for acoustic guitar, Bert Jansch is on the same level as Jimi. That first record of his is epic. It came from England, and I was especially taken by ‘The Needle of Death', such a beautiful and angry song...”  - Neil Young

Bert adds Manhattan show to December East Coast tour: Les Paul Mondays at the Iridium Jazz Club on Dec 20

A second New York date has been added to the Bert's short East Coast tour. Bert will feature at the famous Iridium Jazz Club in New York City on Monday December 20 as part of the Les Paul Tribute Mondays. www.iridiumjazzclub.com/les_tribute.php

For close to 13 years The Iridium was home to Les Paul and his Trio. Nearly a year after his passing, the Father of the Electric Guitar continues to shine on with Les Paul Mondays, an ongoing concert series dedicated to his lasting legacy. Until his final days, Les Paul maintained one of New York's longest-running residencies at The Iridium, one of New York City's most prestigious live music venues. Starting in 1995, when Paul began his tenure at the club, nearly every major guitar god at one point or another humbly shared the stage with Paul - Slash, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards and innumerable others. To honour Les Paul's memory, Iridium has continued the Monday night tradition, presenting the world's greatest guitarists appearing in an intimate setting along with The Les Paul Trio.

Bert returns to the US in December 2010 for East Coast dates with Pegi Young and Meg Baird

Bert is delighted to announce that he will return to the US in December for six East Coast shows with the wonderful Pegi Young Band as his special guest, and one in Philadelphia with the very lovely Meg Baird of Espers opening.

This follows Bert's recent surgery, which forced him to pull out of the Gulf Coast leg of the Neil Young US tour in September as well as cancel a series of his own shows on the East Coast where Pegi Young (Neil's wife) was due to open for Bert. Bert was deeply disappointed to miss the September and October shows, as he enjoyed every moment of touring with Neil over the summer, as well as the West Coast shows he played in the summer with the Pegi Young Band opening. Bert was also particularly disappointed to miss an appearance at Farm Aid, which he was very much looking forward to. However, he is delighted to report now that the surgery was successful, and the new confirmed dates are:

Drag City release stunning vinyl versions of LA Turnaround and the other Charisma albums

Drag City have released stunning new vinyl versions of L.A. Turnaround, Santa Barbara Honeymoon and A Rare Conundrum worldwide. Following on from the first-time release on CD in 2009 of these most sought after albums in Bert's catalogue, the new vinyl versions are beautifully packaged with heavy card jackets featuring all the original artwork plus brand new sleevenotes along with contemporary photos. Preserving the integrity of the original albums, they also each come with a bonus CD containing the extra material available on each of the CD releases, including, in the case of LA Turnaround, the film made during the original recording sessions at Tony Stratton Smith's Sussex home, featuring Bert, Mike Nesmith, Red Rhodes and others recording and performing four of the songs as well as relaxing and playing pool. Bert has supervised the re-mastering of each album himself as well as hand-picking the bonus material. These gorgeous vinyl packages certainly live up to the many 5-star reviews the reissues received when they were released on CD in 2009.

LA Turnaround, Santa Barbara Honeymoon and A Rare Conundrum to come out on CD – 15 June 2009

Bert is truly delighted to announce at last the long-awaited first-time release on CD of the three albums he recorded in the 1970s for The Famous Charisma Label: the seminal L.A. Turnaround , Santa Barbara Honeymoon and A Rare Conundrum . These most sought after albums in Bert's catalogue have been out of print for decades and have never been available on CD before. The new CDs are scheduled for release by EMI/Virgin on 15 June 2009 and Bert has supervised the re-mastering of each album himself as well as hand-picking the bonus material, much of which is previously unreleased. In some cases this material is newly discovered from the album sessions and has been unheard by anyone in thirty years, including Bert himself! The new CD of LA Turnaround also includes an amazingly atmospheric and previously unseen 13 minute film, made during the recordings of the album at Tony Stratton Smith's Sussex mansion and featuring Bert, Mike Nesmith, Red Rhodes and others recording and performing four of the songs as well as relaxing and playing pool. The CD will be an “Enhanced CD” – put it in any computer to view the film. Each of the new editions is beautifully re-packaged, featuring all the original artwork plus brand new specially written sleevenotes along with contemporary photos and memorabilia. These releases have been a long time coming, but we think are worth the wait!

Bert and Ralph McTell's tribute to Davy Graham on Bert's myspace player

Lots of you outside the UK said you could not hear the tribute Bert and Ralph McTell paid to the late, great Davy Graham at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in February, where they played Davy's immortal “Angie”. This was due to licensing restrictions on the BBC website, but to rectify this we now have the recording from the BBC, and they have given us permission to put it up on Bert's myspace player so everyone can now hear the performance of “Angie” as well as Bert and Ralph's personal tributes to Davy, which were not broadcast when the original radio show aired.

Enjoy it at www.myspace.com/bertjansch.

Live album release

The newly discovered live album, Bert Jansch–The River Sessions, recorded at City Hall in Glasgow in 1974 (released by River Records) is now available. The River Sessions sees Bert in magnificent form, in an extraordinary set drawing from the two albums of the period: LA Turnaround and Santa Barbara Honeymoon. Eight of the fourteen tracks are from LA Turnaround – the only place right now to find so many songs from this seminal and sought-after album on CD. (LA Turnaround is so sought-after that even Bert himself had to resort to buying a vinyl copy on ebay!) What makes The River Sessions even more special is that the songs were originally recorded and performed in a group setting, while here they are superb solo tracks – pure Bert Jansch and his guitar. There are full sleeve-notes with brand new track-by-track comments from Bert himself.

March 2004

A live album recorded at the City Hall in Glasgow in 1974 has been discovered and is soon to be released by River Records. It’s an extraordinary set – even Bert was blown away when he heard it – and features tracks from
LA Turnaround, most of which are not available anywhere else, including the only known live version of Chambertin.

There are lots of new gigs on the gigs page, and Bert will be playing this years Cambridge Folk Festival (1 August), and at the Edinburgh Festival (26 August) – see live info page for details.

Watch this space for more news – we’ll be trying to keep the site more up to date than has been happening recently (a few problems got in the way but are resolved now) and also if you have sent us an email – we have got them and we will reply (had a few problems with that as well but all sorted out now!)

Johnny ‘Guitar’ Hodge album
La Luna, the album Bert produced for Johnny ‘Guitar’ Hodge (some of you will have seen Johnny perform at Bert’s gigs, and may know about the album) has been finished at last. It’s a great record, and Bert plays on two tracks. Among Johnny’s excellent songs there’s a cover version of Bert’s Step Back, and there’s also the original version of La Luna – Johnny’s song that Bert covered on Edge of a Dream. If you’d like to get hold of a copy, contact Johnny at jguitar@blueyonder.co.uk

60th Birthday Celebrations – November 2003
The
birthday concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on 8 November was a triumphant success. Everyone on stage did a fantastic job and the sell-out audience was wonderfully warm and enthusiastic – even breaking into a spontaneous massed chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ at the beginning of the second set! Thank you to everyone who was there – both on stage and off. It was a truly wonderful evening. It was reviewed in The Guardian on 12 November – to read the review click here. The BBC birthday special was shown on BBC4 on Friday 21 November at 9.00pm (repeated later that night at 12.35am and again on Saturday night at 1.05am). This separate live performance was also excellent, and there has been great reaction to the broadcast.

60th Birthday celebrations
The filming of Bert’s 60th Birthday BBC Special at the beautifully refurbished LSO St Luke's Church in Old Street went fantastically well last Friday (24 October). Bert was joined on stage by Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler and Johnny ‘Guitar’ Hodge, as well as old friend Ralph McTell and fellow Pentangler Jacqui McShee. Everyone was on excellent form, and a great time was had by all. The programme will be shown on BBC 4 on Friday November 21.

Next up is Bert’s 60th Birthday Concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Saturday 8 November. Special guests that night will be Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler, Ralph McTell, Hope Sandoval and David Roback (both from Mazzy Star), Colm O'Ciosoig (My Bloody Valentine), Johnny ‘Guitar’ Hodge and Bert’s son, Adam Jansch.

The celebrations coincide with the culmination of Sanctuary's recent superbly packaged Bert Jansch reissue series, which has seen Bert's classic Transatlantic catalogue, along with other key albums, systematically reissued – each one remastered, beautifully re-packaged and often bolstered by additional tracks. The last in the series, 1979’s Avocet, has been remixed and digitally remastered under Bert's own supervision, and is the first time the complete album – one of the most sought after of Bert's career – has been available on CD. All other re-releases in the series have been digitally remastered and gorgeously repackaged (many with classy slip-cases) featuring facsimiles of all the original packaging together with new 12 page glossy booklets with photos and brand new extensive sleevenotes. And all at mid-price too! Together with Bert’s last two studio albums, Crimson Moon and Edge of a Dream, all Bert’s albums are now available in fabulous and informative packages – a great excuse to replace battered vinyl copies, or a perfect way to get to know Bert’s music.

November 2003: 60th Birthday celebrations
Bert will turn 60 this November. The occasion will be marked with a special 60th Birthday Concert on Saturday 8 November 2003 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at London's South Bank. Bert will be joined for the show by several special guests who have been fans over the years: Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler, Hope Sandoval, David Roback (Mazzy Star), Colm O'Ciosoig and Ralph McTell have already confirmed their appearances at the show, and more names may be announced soon. Tickets are £18/£15/12 (concessions £2 off) from the South Bank Box Office: 020 7960 4201 or www.rfh.org.uk.

A BBC Special is also being filmed to mark this milestone. Bert's live performance will feature more special guests, and will be broadcast in the New Year. More news on that to follow.

Edge of a Dream album, has been used in the current smash hit film Calendar Girls. It is used twice, and is the first music you hear as the story unfolds….check it out!
Re-release of Avocet
Bert's 1979 instrumental masterwork,
Avocet, finally sees a long-awaited CD release on 27 October 2003 (Sanctuary CMQCD763). This extraordinary instrumental album, one of the masterpieces of Bert’s career, was remixed and digitally remastered in July 2003 under Bert's own supervision. It has also been beautifully repackaged, featuring both versions of the original artwork and a 12 page glossy booklet with photos and brand new extensive sleevenotes. Much sought after, this is the first time the complete album has been available on CD.
March 2003: Rory Gallagher – "Wheels Within Wheels"
Wheels Within Wheels, a new album of Rory Gallagher's material, specifically with an acoustic flavour, was released on 10 March 2003. It features collaborations with Martin Carthy, Lonnie Donegan and the Dubliners, amongst others, and a version of She Moved Thro' the Fair/Ann Cran Ull arranged and performed by Rory and Bert. Rory wanted to work on this with Bert shortly before he died, and sent Bert his own guitar part, but tragically he passed away before the collaboration could be completed. When Rory's brother, Donal Gallagher – keeper of the Rory Gallagher flame – found out about this some time later, he asked Bert to complete the track … and here it is.

August 2002
Acclaim for "Crimson Moon" | Channel 4 documentary | Biography published by Bloomsbury | BBC Radio 2 Lifetime Achievement award | TV appearance with Johnny Marr and Bernard Butler | Digitally remastered and fabulously repackaged early album reissues | tribute album.

Welcome to bertjansch.com, the official Bert Jansch website. The new millennium has so far been extraordinary for Bert Jansch, that most talented of musicians and songwriters. Bert's profile is at a height unmatched since his early days on the cutting edge of the Brit Folk boom of the mid 60s. His last album, Crimson Moon, (released June 2000) won career-best critical plaudits, and features telling contributions from contemporary guitar heroes, and long-time Bert fans, Johnny Marr and Bernard Butler. The whole album was recorded, engineered and produced by Bert himself - the first time he has taken that role completely - and is a remarkable work. Special mention could be given to tracks such as Caledonia, a warm travelogue/tribute to his home land, Crimson Moon, the mellow title track or the epic Fool's Mate. Or there is Downunder, a sparkling guitar duet, the stark, skeletal Neptune's Daughter or the reflective The River Bank.... it's hard to choose a favourite.

The album appeared to a torrent of press and TV attention: major articles in The Guardian, The Independent, London's Time Out, and Mojo magazine were accompanied by many more articles and reviews and the cover of Guitar magazine. In the same week as the album came out Dreamweaver, a Channel 4 documentary on Bert and his music - a year in the making by film-maker Matt Quinn - was broadcast. This riveting film was artfully shot in black and white, and featured contributions from many participants ranging from Marr and Butler to Marianne Faithfull. Some played together with Bert and some talked about the man and his music. (Dreamweaver was the choice of the day's TV in The Daily Telegraph). In May 2000 Bert also appeared on Later with Jools Holland on BBC2 together with Johnny Marr and Bernard Butler, where they played Riverbank from Crimson Moon - a much talked about performance.

In August 2000 Colin Harper's excellent biography, Dazzling Stranger: Bert Jansch and the British Folk and Blues Revival was published by Bloomsbury. Bloomsbury chose the occasion of Bert's sell-out concert at the Edinburgh Festival to launch the biography, with a special event together with Colin Harper before the concert. The book was in Mojo magazine's top ten for months.

September 2000 saw a tribute album, People On The Highway: a Bert Jansch Encomium, appearing on Market Square Records, featuring many of Bert's songs specially recorded by other artists in tribute to Jansch and his music. Market Square were overwhelmed by the response to their projected project when it was announced - what had at first been envisaged as a single album became a double CD because so many artists wanted to participate! A sell-out concert at London's Jazz Café, also in September, saw Bernard Butler appearing on stage with Bert, as well as Johnny 'Guitar' Hodge, Loren Jansch and Bert's son, up and coming musician Adam Jansch.

The pace did not let up in 2001. On 5 February Bert was awarded the BBC Radio 2 Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony at the Cumberland Hotel at Marble Arch in London. The award was presented by Johnny Marr, who made an impassioned speech noting all the great musicians whom Bert had influenced and what an inspiration Bert had been and still was to himself. He said that Bert had "completely re-invented guitar playing, and set a standard which is unequalled today". After the presentation Johnny and Bernard Butler joined Bert on stage to perform Bert's old classic, Poison. The awards were broadcast on Folk on 2 on Wednesday 7 February 2001 and Bert, Johnny and Bernard's performance broadcast on Wednesday 14 February 2001.

Bert's record company, Sanctuary, have also been comprehensively re-releasing much of Bert's back catalogue. An official release for Live at the 12-Bar - formerly an 'authorised bootleg' though of studio standard  followed Crimson Moon, and 2001 saw the release of the brand new live album, Downunder: Live in Australia, together with beautifully packaged re-releases of classic albums Moonshine (original release 1973) and The Ornament Tree (original release 1990). The new classy packaging fuses the original artwork with brand new sleevenotes and full lyrics. In March 2001, rare and powerful lost gem From the Outside finally saw a full scale release with new artwork by Bert himself together with new sleevenotes and full lyrics, as well as extra tracks. The two albums Bert recorded in the 1980s with Loren Auerbach (now his wife), After the Long Night and Playing the Game, were also re-released on one CD with beautiful new packaging, photos, new sleevenotes and full lyrics.

These releases were followed by stunning reissues of Bert's early back catalogue. Bert Jansch, It Don't Bother Me, Jack Orion, Bert & John, Nicola, Birthday Blues, and Rosemary Lane were all included in this programme. Each was digitally remastered and gorgeously repackaged with a classy slip-case featuring facsimiles of the original packaging and a 12 page glossy booklet with lots of photos and brand new extensive sleevenotes. Some also include bonus tracks: Bert Jansch has two previously unreleased numbers: Instrumental Medley 1964 and Angie (Live) 1964; and Nicola has two extra tracks. Rosemary Lane has a textured slip case.

Bert's eagerly awaited new album, Edge of a Dream is due out on October 7 2002.  It features Bernard Butler, Hope Sandoval, Dave Swarbrick and Ralph McTell amongst others, and is said by those who've heard it to be his finest work yet, so watch this space!
